How to Reduce Memory Foam Smell (Mattress or Topper)

01.23.2020 by PetiteM // 3 Comments

When you buy a new memory foam mattress, mattress topper or memory foam pillow, how can you get rid of its smell?

Nowadays, the technology of memory foam has earned a stable foothold as a favorite of many people when it comes to bedroom items such as pillows, mattresses, and mattress toppers. The material has a lot of benefits regarding comfort and durability that most consumers will be satisfied with, but there’s one flaw they usually complain about: the smell, which is described as similar to “a newly painted room” or “a new car”.

Although the manufacturers claim that this funky and heavy smell is likely to dissipate after some days, depending on the products, the room ventilation, the sensitivity of the users,… wouldn’t you love to speed the process up a bit?

Where does the smell come from?

Memory foam is also known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. The products made of memory foam are usually treated flame-retardants to enhance the resistance against flammability. Said chemicals are volatile organic compounds that escape the foam as “off-gas” and release a strong odor into the atmosphere.

Another question people are interested in is: Is “off-gas” dangerous?

You encounter off-gases more often than you might have thought! Dryer sheets, cleaners, non-stick pans, and bedroom articles,… but fortunately, the concentration of chemicals radiating from these items aren’t enough to reach the dangerous level, nor do they cause cancers or extreme intoxication. If you are sensitive or allergic to them, allergic reactions like throat irritation and dizziness might happen.

How to get rid of memory foam smell?

#Rescue the items from plastic wraps

The longer the memory foam is stuck in the plastic, the more it’s going to ferment and the deeper those gases are embedded in the material. As soon as you bring your purchases home, remove the wrap on instant and leave them in a well-ventilated space.

#Refresh the air

It’s best to handle the matter from the beginning. After removing the packaging, place the product outdoor for a few hours at least, if the weather is dry and not humid. In case your abode doesn’t allow you to have much free space, you can also lean the item against a wall so all sides can be in contact with fresh air, open the windows and turn on a window fan to draw air out of the room. The longer the foam product airs out, the less noticeable the odor will be.

#Baking soda

It does wonders for the strong smells from various types of food in a refrigerator, and you will be delighted to know chemical fragrances are not a challenge at all. When the memory foam has been aired out, scatter baking soda over the surfaces and wait for about an hour before vacuuming it away with an upholstery brush attachment. For the best results, don’t hesitate to apply the baking soda directly on the foam instead of the covers.

#Keep the room fresh

A bowl of white vinegar will help reduce the smell in the air as it absorbs airborne off-gases. The vinegar itself has a trademark smell as well, but it fights against the scent of memory foam. If it bothers you, though, you can leave the vinegar in the room while you are away and get rid of it before bedtime.

Plus point: Vinegar also deodorizes drains.

Always keep the room fresh

#Keep the objects clean

You sleep on your mattress, mattress topper, and pillow. They inevitably absorb the moistures your body releases and a humid environment is very favorable by germs, bugs, and allergens – how terrible is that!

When it’s time for washing, give your mattress an air-out session. Remove the linens and run the ceiling fan (if the room has one) on high speed to remove the moisture and let the items breathe. It’s also recommended to use the baking soda as instructed above.

#Have some fun jumping on the bed

You can try this on the first day of your de-gassing battle because the pressure you leave on the mattress will force the vapors out of the material. However, you would want to flee the room for a while and stay a safe distance away from the toxic gases you are trying to get rid of.

Beware: Some manufacturers don’t advise this method, you’d better check the warranty in advance so it won’t be voided.

In conclusion

If you were worried about the damage it might cause your health, you would be able to sigh in relief by now. Mattresses, pillows, and toppers are made safe for use according to regulations, standards, and third-party certifications. But the tips we have offered are still worth trying, as the bedroom should be the most relaxing place in your house, in which you can have sufficient rest after hours of working.

I feel like just yesterday we were packing up the tree and setting goals and resolutions for the new year. Yet… here we are: Ready to unbox the tree again and start preparing for the holiday season! As you begin shopping for your loved ones, no matter their interests, I wanted to share some eco-conscious gift ideas for you to wrap up (with reusable/recyclable gift wrap) and place under the tree!

1. FOR THE BEAUTY LOVER

There are more and more beauty brands out there looking to green their products, HOORAY! Companies like RMS beauty, Tarte, and Glossier are all doing better to source their ingredients and improve on testing methods. Grab an eco conscious mascara for your BFF, because who needs to use harsh chemicals for that bold lash look. Gift your mom a lightweight, non animal tested foundation, and don’t forget to add a beeswax based lip balm!

FOR THE BEAUTY LOVER

2. FOR THE FITNESS FAN

More often than not, I spy early risers at the gym with their non-reusable, plastic, hard to recycle water bottles. Snag a really cool and eco-friendly water bottle for the fitness lover in your life, and help them take their gym-cre  to the next level, while being the real hero this holiday and saving the planet! (ok, I WISH it was this easy, but eliminating plastic waste in landfills would be a great start!)

3. FOR THE MINIMALIST

Sometimes, the last thing someone needs at the end of the holiday season is more STUFF!! Consider gifting your family or friends the ultimate green gift, and offer to plant a tree in their name with organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation! If you feel bad about showing up empty handed (since a tree may be a bit too big for their living room), bring a small potted plant as a placeholder! Tiny trees and succulents also make great hostess gifts! For the apartment dweller, check out these cool plant stands and pots! Fill them with some greens that will help improve indoor air quality and liven up their patio or cozy corner!

4. FOR THE ARM-PARTY ANIMAL

Watch brand Daniel Wellington is making investing in stylish timepieces easy this holiday season! If you have a bestie or boyfriend, family member or husband that loves a good watch, these are perfect! ALL DW watches have interchangeable watch-bands, so buy this gift once, and every year they can update the style with a variety of options (no need to buy all new arm candy each year).

5. FOR THE FOODIE

Some of you reading this are the real MVP’s when it comes to meal prepping, or you at least know someone that is! Upgrade their weekly prep session with some glass storage containers and dish ware. They can finally recycle their “reusable” thai-to-go containers, and forever breakup with plastic tupperware. bye bye nineten-eighty-five!

6. FOR THE ACTIVIST

Some of the women on your list deserve an extra hug and a lot of love this holiday. Especially those hard working women who love with really big hearts all year round! Thats where Rena.Iman comes in! Rena has been designing stunning luxury handbags for the working woman on your list, but it gets better! THESE BAGS GIVE BACK! Portions of proceeds benefit womens shelters here in Virginia, and they are made with so much love! Snag the Audrey tote or the Laura clutch for any bad-ass babe on your list this holiday!

7. FOR THE FASHION CONSCIOUS

We just had a little chat about my new favorite eco-fashion brand last week, but in case you missed it, theres only one word you need to know: EVERLANE! This brand brings transparency to the dinner table, and shares every last detail about the manufacturing process. From real cost, to retail cost, and even overhead, this company searches far and wide for the best resources for their fibers, and designs looks to last! I don’t think there’s a single Item on the site that I DONT want to own… MOM: if you are reading this, I will take one of each please. **kisses

8. FOR THE JET SETTER

If you have any friends that pull a “four christmases” and try to ditch the holiday madness in favor for a tropical getaway, check out LIVELY SWIM! This incredible leisurè  brand not only knocks their fits and sizing out of the park, they have been able to fund the donation of over 30,000 bras to women in need while doing it! Every November and June they donate towards this effort and every purchase counts! Their swimsuits are the perfect extension of their intimates line and feature bold colors and fun tropical patterns! Use the code SQUADGIRL_JORDAN for $10 off your purchase!

9. FOR THE CAFFIENE ADDICT

Some people can’t operate until their first cup of coffee… some days (read:most) thats me. For the coffee lover in your life, check out your list of local coffee roasters, and stop by your favorite shop to grab them a fresh bag of beans! Blend them up and toss the grains in the french press, and enjoy a soothing start to the day! I have been loving Blanchards, a local RVA coffee company. They have such an incredible outlook on the importance of people when it comes to sourcing their blends, I love the heart behind their brand!

10. FOR THE RECYCLIST

One of my favorite things about Madewell is their Denim Repurposing program! Bring in an old pair of denim, get $20 towards your next pair, and one of their Bien Fait reusable totes! Give the denim, give the recyclable bag, use the bag as the gift wrap, help insulate buildings with recycled denim… the reasons why this program rocks are ENDLESS. I have donated over 5 pairs of my old jeans to this program, and love everything about how it works. Everyone wins!

EVEN IF  YOU AREN’T SHOPPING FOR THE CONSCIOUS CONSUMER, TAKE YOUR GIFT GIVING TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND CONSIDER SHOPPING FROM THIS LIST THIS CHRISTMAS. IT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE MUCH, BUYING A WATER BOTTLE, PLANTING A TREE, DONATING YOUR DENIM, BUT IT ALL ADDS UP. WE HAVE TO SAVE THE PLANET, AND WE HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

“Capsules” By Cladwell – My Winter Capsule Wardrobe

01.04.2016 by PetiteM // Leave a Comment

As you may have read in my previous Resolutions post, I am attempting a 3 Month Capsule Wardrobe this winter. The hope is that I can really streamline my life and minimize the amount of unwanted or unworn clothing hanging in my closet. Thanks to the help of an amazing new company, Capsules by Cladwell, I was able to really take this process step by step using a tool that reinvented my closet in ways I never thought possible!

Check out the whole process in this amazing video my friend Cassie helped me create, and then read more about my journey after the jump!

MY CAPSULE RULES

REMEMBER THAT EVERYONE’S CAPSULE JOURNEY IS DIFFERENT!
+ I will only wear my 40-50 capsule pieces for the 3 month period
(note that as little as 15 items may work for you,
but this range works for my versatile and busy lifestyle)
+ During this 3 month winter season, I will not shop for clothing or shoes
(AHHH, Pray for me ladies!)
+ Winter coats, Accessories, and shoes do not count in my 50 item limit
(because they’re promising a frigid January,
and jumbo layers are where it’s at…)
+ Undergarments, workout wear and pajamas are not included in the list
(LBH… morning trips to the coffee shop/market
will likely involve an item or two from this category)

WHY I WANTED TO SIMPLIFY MY WARDROBE:

I can’t begin to count the hours I spend in the morning trying on outfits, and endlessly thinking”I have nothing to wear.” Things no longer felt new, exciting, or challenging in my closet, and there was almost TOO MUCH to choose from (!!GASP!! That’s right, I said it!). I love the idea of having less to choose from, but also filling my closet with only pieces that I truly love and that make me happy while wearing them! I feel like I really found a groove and an inspiration for a modern and minimalistic lifestyle and achieving it started with simply ELIMINATING. I also love being inspired by simplicity, and found that was my biggest motivation for this project!

HOW I APPROACHED MY CAPSULE CLOSET

I started by creating an account on the Capsules by Cladwell site. I love that this app really walked me through the process of going through my closet and really pairing everything down to the essentials. From creating mood boards, to step-by-step instructions for emptying my closet, and separating out seasonal pieces, this app is the real deal when it comes to giving you a clear and concise direction for where you want to take your closet!
I had to really step back and assess just how important having a personal style is to my every day life, and just how I was going to accomplish a streamlined wardrobe. I started following the directions from Capsules by Cladwell, and took out every single piece of clothing from my closet. I had piles upon piles to sift through, but I sorted them all into two piles: the pieces I loved and wanted to hold on to and then the pieces that could go and not be missed. Surprisingly the pile of GO’s was bigger than the pile of KEEP’s. I then relocated the GO pile in another space to focus on the selection process. Having laid out every single piece I own all at once made it so much easier for me to find a clear direction and pick out key pieces and supporting pieces to bring into my Capsule.

I then followed the app’s instructions of eliminating seasonal pieces that wouldn’t be relevant in the winter, and folded them up to be placed out of sight until spring. Placing all of my remaining pieces on the closet rack, I really felt accomplished with what simplicity I had just created; A sense  of peace washed over me. **Of course I panicked and immediately after finishing I FaceTime’d my BFF Jenna to express my loneliness, and whine about whether I was doing the right thing. She was wholeheartedly supportive and I instantly felt better about the whole thing, and in fact felt like I had a whole new closet full of pieces i couldn’t WAIT to style! She is the best!

NEXT STEPS

After finally selecting your capsule pieces, you can plug in information about the color palate you selected, your daily activities from work to date night and everything in between, and what types of clothes you wear.  Capsules will then help you develop a list of the types of pieces that would be ideal for your lifestyle. You can plug in information about the pieces you already have, and learn more about the pieces they suggest. by checking Yes/No if you own the piece they suggest, it will create a list of items that you can use to create a shopping list. I LOVE how far Capsules goes to help make your capsule wardrobe the most efficient and exciting new way to view your closet!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS

I really wish I could  have selected a few less pieces, but I love layering, and having any less than one sweater for every day of the week wasn’t going to work for my thin blood in this winter weather! I really hope to learn, now with even less choice, which pieces I continue to love, and which ones I can further do without.

What I love about this app is that it is completely unique to you and your lifestyle, just as it is today. The challenge is simply to  beat fast fashion and re-think your closet. I found that every visit to the mall had me itching to swipe my card, never leaving empty handed. While I believe that retail therapy is absolutely a REAL form of release, I was tired of succumbing to the act of selfish shopping. I hope that at the end of this project, I can really think long and hard before bringing new pieces home, and that I can begin shopping with purpose, intention, and only for pieces that bring JOY and cohesiveness to my personal style!

MORE ABOUT CAPSULES BY CLADWELL

As a solution to fast fashion, we built a site that generates a simple wardrobe by focusing on your personal preferences and the activities in your life. Users check-off the items you own, and only buy what you need. So you can clear out the clutter and get on with what really matters in life.

See we believe that sometimes we buy clothes just because they’re cheap or new. Over time, this creates clutter in our homes, hearts and minds. At Capsules, we want to make lives better and we believe we can do that by helping you own less while loving it more.
